How to Get Food Delivered on Koh Samui
Food delivery apps do work on Koh Samui, but which app and how well depends on where you're staying. Grab and LINE MAN both run food delivery on the island. foodpanda does not; it stopped operating in Thailand altogether in 2025. Coverage on either app isn't the same everywhere, and a villa down a quiet soi is a different situation from a hotel room on a main road.
Below: which apps to use, when ordering direct from a restaurant is the better route, and how to give a driver a location they can find at a villa or hotel.
Which delivery apps work on Koh Samui
Grab (through GrabFood) and LINE MAN are Thailand's two largest delivery apps, and both operate on Koh Samui. Grab is usually the easiest starting point for a first-time visitor, since it sits inside the same app you'd already use to book a car or taxi, with a card or in-app wallet already saved. LINE MAN, run by LINE MAN Wongnai, is the other big name; it grew out of a merger with Wongnai, Thailand's large restaurant-listing site, and Samui cafes and restaurants list it alongside Grab as a delivery option.
foodpanda is not part of this picture anymore. Its parent company, Delivery Hero, closed foodpanda's Thailand operation on 23 May 2025, saying it was refocusing on more profitable Asian markets; the Thai unit had never turned a profit in its 13 years of operation. If you've used foodpanda on a past Thailand trip, it's no longer an option here or anywhere else in the country.
| Option | Good for | How you pay | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grab (GrabFood) | A quick, English-friendly order from a familiar app | Cash, card or GrabPay Wallet in-app | Rider availability and fees change by area and time of day |
| LINE MAN | A second app to compare restaurants, fees and rider availability | Cash, card, LINE Pay or PromptPay QR | Check the app language setting; menus from local restaurants are often in Thai |
| Ordering direct from a restaurant | Anywhere the apps show no riders, or when you'd rather deal with the kitchen directly | Set by the restaurant (Khun Yak: PromptPay QR on the payment page) | No app commission, and the restaurant hears your delivery notes directly |
Coverage and timing: what to expect
Coverage and availability on both apps vary by area and by time of day, and neither Grab nor LINE MAN publishes a fixed map of where they will and won't deliver on Samui. In practice, areas closer to the main ring road and the busier beach strips tend to have more riders logged on, while quieter side roads or the less built-up parts of the island can mean a longer wait, a higher fee, or no rider showing as available at all when you open the app.
Timing matters too. Around the main lunch and dinner rush, expect delivery estimates to stretch out on both apps, and check that the restaurant itself is open before you order. This guide won't give you a fixed number of minutes, because it changes with the weather, the rider pool and the restaurant's own kitchen queue on the day.
Ordering directly from a restaurant
When an app shows nothing nearby, or you'd simply rather order from the restaurant itself, plenty of places on Koh Samui take orders straight from their own website or by phone, with their own driver or delivery arrangement. This skips the app entirely, so the order, any special requests and the payment all go directly to the kitchen, rather than through a third party. It's worth checking a restaurant's own site before assuming an app is the only route in.
How to give a driver a location they can find
Thai house and plot numbers are assigned in the order a property was originally registered, not by any geographic pattern, so neighbouring numbers aren't necessarily next to each other (see the Thai addressing system for how the numbering works). On Samui, where many villas sit up side lanes set back from the road, a written address is rarely enough on its own.
- Drop an actual map pin at your gate or entrance in the app, not just a general area of the island.
- Give the villa or hotel name, not only a house number; staff and drivers usually recognise properties by name faster than by address.
- Add a delivery note with the gate code, a landmark, or which building or floor, if that applies.
- Leave a phone number you will answer, so a driver who can't find the gate can call rather than guess.
Delivery to a hotel, villa or condo
Policies for outside food deliveries differ from one property to the next, so it's worth a quick check with reception or your villa host before the order goes in, not after the rider is already at the gate. A few things to ask: whether a rider can come to your door or room, or has to leave the order at a barrier or front desk; whether someone will carry it up or call you when it arrives; and whether the property has a specific spot it asks delivery riders to wait at. None of that is standard across the island, so a short message beforehand saves a cold meal sitting at a checkpoint.
If you're staying around Choeng Mon, the same logic applies: villas and smaller resorts along Hat Choeng Mon Road are easiest for a driver when you've shared a pin and a name, not just a road name.
Paying for delivery: apps versus ordering direct
On Grab and LINE MAN you can usually pay cash to the rider, with a saved card, or through the app's own wallet (GrabPay on Grab, LINE Pay on LINE MAN); LINE MAN's own help centre also lists PromptPay QR among its payment options. Ordering directly from a restaurant's own website works differently, since payment is set by that restaurant rather than an app. Many Thai businesses, Khun Yak included, use a PromptPay QR code for online orders; if you haven't used PromptPay before, our guide to paying with PromptPay as a tourist walks through how it works and what a Thai banking app expects from you.
Whichever route you choose, it helps to know roughly what a meal costs on the island before you order, especially if you're comparing an app's delivery fee against the price of the food itself; see our breakdown of what food costs on Koh Samui for typical numbers.
Ordering delivery or pickup from Khun Yak
You can order from Khun Yak directly on our online ordering page, choosing delivery or pickup for whatever's on the menu; details on both options live on our delivery page. At checkout, delivery orders can include an optional villa or hotel name, an optional Google Maps link so our driver can find your pin, and an optional delivery note for a gate code or landmark, the same location details covered above.
Online orders are paid by PromptPay QR from a Thai banking app; our PromptPay guide for tourists walks through each step and what to do if you don't have one. We're open every day from 11:00 to 22:00, and if something goes wrong with an order, call us on +66 92 951 6949.
